Over 5,000 Local 5 hotel workers went on strike yesterday making it the largest strike of Hawai‘i hotel workers since 1990—7 hotels on Oahu and 1 on Kauai. The hotels striking include Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, Moana Surfrider – a Westin Resort Spa, The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, Sheraton Waikiki, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, and the Sheraton Kauai Resort.
Our members joined over 10,000 workers in 8 cities across the U.S. who announced strike the same morning including Boston, Honolulu, Kauai, Greenwich, New Haven, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle.
Workers from all properties, including those not on strike, stepped up on the picket to chant and marshal. Many strikers have never been on strike before.
Community supporters, other union members, and elected leaders–such as U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, ILWU Local 142, and HNA OPEIU Local 50–all came out to show their support for our fight.
In total, workers distributed thousands of leaflets to hotel guests and had meaningful conversations with visitors who expressed support for our fight.
