2024 3-day Labor Day Strike

We mobilized more members across Waikiki and Kauai in our largest strike since 1990. Even when our employers did everything they could to divide us, workers stepped up and stayed united. We showed our managers that they cannot take our hard work for granted or underestimate our strength. Now, we demand our employers take us seriously: on the picket line, and now: at the bargaining table.

Highlights of the strike:

  • Our members joined over 10,000 workers in 8 cities across the U.S. who announced limited durations strikes the same morning including Boston, Honolulu, Kauai, Greenwich, New Haven, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle.
  • Workers from all properties, including those not on strike, stepped up on the picket line to chant, marshal, and keep the energy up with  different actions like picketing on the beach, meeting other properties for huge shibuyas, and more.
  • Support for our strikers grew over the days – More guests, community & local elected leaders (including U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, State Reps. Amy Perruso, Della Au Belatti & City Councilors Radiant Cordero, Tyler Dos Santos Tam & Esther Kiaaina) joined our line. One guest even donated $650 to our L5 Hardship Fund, while others checked out of the hotels!
  • Our union siblings from the ILWU & UFCW donated over 150 cases of water, nurses from HNA shared ice-cream, and many more joined our pickets!
  • In total, workers distributed thousands of leaflets to hotel guests and had meaningful conversations with visitors who expressed support for our fight.
  • And dozens of our Local 5 members have been featured in local and NATIONAL news!
